* How software is developed and upgraded
* Different types of software and their tasks
* Basic concepts relating to database applications

Using an Operating System:

* What an operating system is and how it works
* Common problems relating to operating systems
* How to manipulate and control the Windows desktop, files and disks
* How to change system settings, install and remove software

* Start and exit a Windows application and use online help

* Edit and format common functions

Word Procession Functions:

* Format text and documents

Networks and the Internet:

* Network fundamentals
* Benefits and risks of network computing
* The relationship between computer networks, other communication networks (like telephone network) and the Internet

Electronic mail:

* How electronic mail works
* How to us an e-mail application
* Appropriate use of e-mail and e-mail related "netiquette"

Using the Internet:

* Types of information sources on the Internet
* How to use a Web browser
* How to search the Internet for information

The Impact of Computers and the Internet on Society:

* How computers are used at work, in school, and at home
* Risks of using computer hardware and software
* Using the Internet safely, legally, and responsibly

Information about the testing following course completion will be discussed in class.
