| History:
The USW/USS Great Lakes Works Career Development Program is a labor/management
negotiated education benefit for USW-represented employees, Locals 1299
and 9264.
The Career Development Center opened in November
1989, offering classes in math and reading. Since then, the CDC has grown
and expanded, and even moved to a different site. For instance, you can
take courses for college credit or enrichment at an approved school; you
can enhance your computer skills, learn about small engines, or enjoy
a variety of personal development classes, all offered on-site at your
CDC. The CDC offers classes from A to W: Adobe PhotoShop Elements to Windows
XP. Stop by and let us know what you are interested in; check out which
classes are coming up in the near future.

Staff: The CDC is administered
by the Local Joint Committee. The LJC ensures that policies enacted by
the Institute for Career Development are carried out, such as tuition
assistance, approval of educational providers, and appointing staff.
Your Local Joint Committee members are currently:
Emerson (Jim) Krueger Jr., union co-chair
Steve Kovalchik, company co-chair
Marc Barragan, President Local 1299
Ginger DeCoster, President Local 9264
In 1995, the LJC appointed Georgia Allison
as CDC coordinator. Georgia first came to the CDC in 1991 as an
instructor. She has a Bachelor degree in secondary education and
a Master degree in elementary education. As coordinator, Georgia
has seen our CDC grow from a participation rate of 11% in 1995 to
21% in 2005. Our customized classes have grown from one Small Engine
Repair class in September 1994 to over 30 different classes at the
CDC alone. Georgia believes the Career Development Program offers
the perfect opportunity to begin a new educational journey, continue
what you have already started, or complete your educational goals.
